Mountains of Smoke

The Mountains of Smoke were named as such by Men because of greasy black smoke of Nohr fires which burned on the mountaintops. Although the Men had few encounters with the Skvultmodhei, the Modhein, the Koëhdeth, or the Nohr, they feared the mountains and would not draw near them. The Faithful remember that it was Jehiel's warning to Man not to approach the Mountains of Smoke, lest they be consumed and the earth remember them no more. It was in these mountains that Veirakai's darkest lusts were made manifest, when he gave his captive Elves over to the Skvultmodhei, and they mated with them, and the Modhein were born. From the Modhein came the Nohr, and surely they would have annihilated Man while he was still weak were it not for the Nohr's burning racial hatred for Elves. So most of the giants marched west to harry the Elves and cause them great pain and suffering.
