Ilaniëk
Ilaniëk, one of the two Arkastanai cities, is the northernmost city in Chronikos. It is built over hot springs, high on the side of Simsel Mol, or the Shining Mountain. The presence of the hot springs makes the climate bearable for the Elves who live there. Ilaniëk is a large, tiered city with great wealth and little crime. Kenpelmir Ilaniëk, the school of magic in Ilaniëk, is one of the three most prestigious schools of wizardry in Chronikos, and many prospective students from all over the continent come to Ilaniëk with the hopes of studying under the Arkastanai masters. Ilaniëk is, naturally, ruled by a council of miri, or wizards in the tongue of Men. This three-membered council, known collectively and individually as the Sarenmiri, or Lords of Magic, consists of the three Masters of Kenpelmir Ilaniëk. This council is not elected, and membership is permanent but can be revoked by the agreement of the other two members, though this has never happened. The militia of Ilaniëk is under the command of the Chief Miri, the head instructor, of Kenpelmir Ilaniëk, and the Chief Miri is of course answerable to the Sarenmiri. Commerce and trade in the city are based on the mining of precious metals, mainly silver. The Arkastanai have perfected the art of mining by magical means, since they lack the strength and stamina of Dwarves and the Gnomish knowledge of the earth. They trade mostly with Liratelvan, which passes on goods traded for from the kingdoms of Men, and occasionally with the Tuhlen. Ilaniëk means "Cold Glory."
